Children’s Book Awards and Conservation Stories: Fishers in the Forest Recognized by Nature Generation

Each year, when the Nature Generation releases its list of recognized books, We feel two things at once. Gratitude and a deep respect for the work being done in this space.

The competition is real.

These are not just beautifully illustrated stories. They are carefully researched, thoughtfully written books that take conservation seriously while still speaking to children in ways that feel honest and inviting.

This year, Fishers in the Forest was named a recommended book.

That recognition means a great deal to us.

This story began with a question about an animal many children have never heard of. The Pacific fisher is elusive, rarely seen, yet essential to the balance of the forest. Writing this book meant finding a way to make that hidden life visible without losing the integrity of the science or the quiet nature of the animal itself.

To see it included alongside so many strong titles is humbling.

What stands out most about the list each year is the range. Some books center on activism. Others highlight scientific discovery. Some are grounded in a specific place and invite children to slow down and observe what is right in front of them. There is no single approach, and that is what makes the collection so powerful.

It also raises expectations.

Being part of this space means continuing to ask hard questions about the work. Is the science accurate. Is the story grounded in place. Does it give children something real to hold onto. Not just facts, but a sense of connection.

There are many titles on this year’s list that we have already added to our own shelves. That feels important to say. These are the kinds of books we want to share and place into the hands of children.

Because in the end, this is not about standing apart. It is about standing with others who believe that stories can help children understand, care for, and protect the natural world.
