Meet Marisol, Our Park Ranger in Book Three: Fishers in the Forest
In our third book, Fishers in the Forest, Adele visits Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks with her dad and meets Marisol, a wildlife biologist who has been studying a mysterious animal for years.
The Pacific fisher once roamed freely through California’s mountain forests. Today, these rare mammals are in danger. Marisol helps Adele understand what happened. Logging and development have taken away large parts of their habitat. Some fishers have been harmed by poison left in the forest by people growing illegal crops.
But Marisol also shows Adele the hopeful side of science. Wildlife biologists are tracking fishers with radio collars. They are studying which forest areas the fishers still use. Some scientists are working to connect patches of forest so the animals can travel safely and find mates.
This story is filled with wonder and quiet moments in the forest. It is also about how kids and scientists alike can care for the land and the animals that live there.
