Gisa Nico Discusses National Park Week on KHTS Radio
This week, Gisa joined Jade and Jen on KHTS Radio to talk about National Park Week, which begins August 22 and celebrates the National Park Service's 110th birthday.
The conversation covered several ways families can enjoy America's national parks, including the Every Kid Outdoors program. Every fourth-grade student across the country is eligible for a free pass to national parks and other federal public lands for an entire year, making it a great opportunity for families to get outside and explore together.
Gisa also shared the story behind the Bringing National Parks to Life children's book series. It all started during a visit to Death Valley National Park. As she usually does when visiting a park, Gisa stopped in the bookstore looking for a children's book about one of the park's most remarkable endangered animals—the desert pupfish. When she couldn't find one, David suggested they write it themselves. Gisa wasn't interested at first, but David kept planting the seed. Eventually, she agreed, and together they wrote Fish in the Desert.
That first book became the beginning of the Bringing National Parks to Life series. Today, the award-winning series introduces children to endangered animals that live in America's national parks while weaving accurate science, ecology, conservation, and real wildlife research into every story.
The interview also touched on why family visits to national parks matter. Spending time outdoors, asking questions, meeting park rangers, spotting wildlife, and reading together before or after a trip all help children see these places in a new way.
Thank you to Jade, Jen, and the entire KHTS Radio team for the invitation. It was a pleasure talking about National Park Week, sharing the Every Kid Outdoors program, and telling the story of how Bringing National Parks to Life began.
