Kids Nature Program at Desert National Wildlife Refuge

Families are invited to a special children’s program at Desert National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest wildlife refuges in the country and a remarkable place to explore desert ecology with kids.

We’ll be there leading hands-on activities inspired by my book Fish in the Desert. Children will create their own desert pupfish craft, learn how these tiny fish survive extreme heat, and gather for a read-aloud that brings Nevada’s desert springs to life. Books will be available, and we look forward to meeting young readers and families who care about wildlife conservation.

Cris will also present a special educational program about the rare Pahrump Poolfish, a native Nevada fish with a powerful conservation story. It’s a meaningful opportunity for children to understand how science and stewardship help protect endangered species.

Inside the visitor center, families can take part in a wildlife scavenger hunt designed to encourage observation, curiosity, and discovery. It’s an engaging way for kids to learn about native plants and animals.

If you are looking for family-friendly events in Nevada, outdoor education programs for kids, or wildlife activities near Las Vegas, this program offers a meaningful way to experience the desert together.
